In the 54- years of the super bowl era only a dozen of teams have appeared in back to back super bowls. Out of those 12 teams only seven of them went on to win back to back super bowls. The most recent one being the 2003-2004 Patriots. Do I think the defending super bowl champions will have a bad season? Absolutely not, but I think that winning the super bowl this season again will not happen.
The offensive line could be a concern with unproven interior linemen Nick Allegretti and Austin Reiter slated to start next season. Reiter has been a full-time starter for just one season while Allegretti was a backup as a rookie last season. That is my first concern when looking at this team offensively.
Concern number two, the Chiefs were able to get Sammy Watkins to take a pay cut in order to return for another season. However, the former Buffalo Bills top-five pick has not lived up to expectations in Kansas City. He’s averaging less than 600 receiving yards in two seasons with the team. He has about one or two breakout games a year and then becomes silent.
On defense, with the recent arrest of top cornerback Bashaud Breeland concerns depth at that position. Not only his arrest but losing Kendall Fuller in free agency could be a major issue during the season.
AFC is Tough
Let’s not forget how tough the AFC division really is. Last season we saw a great Ravens team go 14-2 behind the play of last years MVP Lamar Jackson. The Ravens got even better this offseason, I’m talking a lot better. They added defensive lineman Derek Wolfe and Calais Campbell. They also too stud rookie running-back J.K. Dobbins in this years draft. Dobbins should fit in very nicely with the style of offense the Ravens run.
The Ravens will not be the only team in the AFC that the Chiefs should be afraid of. The AFC West division is getting better each year. Take a look at the Indianapolis Colts. They have a revamped offense with veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers under center now. Also adding depth with rookies Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr.. They also made a huge splash this offseason when they added All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. General manager Chris Ballard is holding nothing back in 2020 and is fully committed for that super bowl run.
Fresh off a surprise trip to the AFC Championship Game, the Tennessee Titans return star quarterback Ryan Tannehill and reigning NFL rushing champion Derrick Henry. Tennessee also has a stud young receiver in that of A.J. Brown who is ready to take his game to the next level. Boasting one of the most-talented defenses in the NFL. When you’re coached by a guy with a huge mustache anything is possible. Expect these Titans to be a problem for Kansas City in 2020.
How about the Steelers going 8-8 a season ago, without veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger. Now that he is coming back this team should not be slept on. With a great defense lead by T.J. Watt, and a team coached under Mike Tomlin they should be contenders in the AFC once again.
What’s not to like about the Buffalo Bills? They are coming off a surprising trip to the playoffs. They added star receiver Stefon Diggso be the No. 1 target for young quarterback Josh Allen. Defensively, Buffalo might have the most-talented defense in the NFL outside of San Francisco. As the division favorites in the AFC East, these Bills are starting to put a well oiled machine together on both sides of the ball.
Back and Better
Lastly the 49ers are back and have an even better looking team. The team’s defense is among the best in the game. Rookie first-round pick Javon Kinlaw should be a seamless replacement for DeForest Buckner. They also upgraded with future Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is coming off a brilliant rookie season. He’s joined by rookie first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk and All- Pro tight end George Kittle at the skill positions. There’s a reason San Francisco is right up there with Kansas City as the favorite to hoist the Lombardi next February. This team is absolutely loaded.
In The End
The Chiefs love to boast about having the best quarterback in the league and having great skills players to surround Mahomes. But there’s a reason very few have won back to back super bowls. Every single team in the league will be eyeing the Chiefs and will be ready to dethrone them. Many teams have revamped there roster. Andy Reid and company have some work cut out for them!
